Concept
After studying and interpreting cephalopod shapes, I wanted to create a piece that created a relationship between squids and people. Ultimately I settled on a design that modified the functionality of the elbow, the rubbery form changing the sensation of bending a body part squids do not have.
The piece is made from silicon rubber, chosen for its squid-like texture and translucency. The material was cast in simple, hand-cut plexiglass molds, and the casts were then stitched together with fishing line.
The piece was then photographed on the body (Tyra Bell, BFA Furniture Design 2016), and the photographs used to create an editorial layout.
